Tree Planting Tips

Plan Before You Plant

Planting the right tree in the right place keeps your property safe and reduces the need for future trimming. Follow these guidelines:

Before You Dig

Call 811 (Miss Dig) or 1-800-482-7171 at least three days before planting to have underground lines marked. Learn more at missdig.org.

Choose the Right Tree Zone

  • Zone A (60 ft+): Plant large trees (oaks, maples, pines) at least 35 feet from buildings and well away from power lines.

  • Zone B (40 ft or less): Use mid-size trees to frame your home.

  • Zone C (25 ft or less): Plant only small trees or shrubs within 15 feet of overhead lines.

Recommended Small Trees

  • Dwarf Alberta Spruce – 12 ft

  • Amur Maple – 18 ft

  • Flowering Dogwood – 30 ft

  • Crab Apple – 30 ft

Shrubs (Under 15 ft)

  • Silky Dogwood – 10 ft

  • Honeysuckle – 10 ft

  • Sand Cherry – 6 ft

 Energy-Saving Planting

  • Windbreaks: Plant evergreens 50+ ft west or north of your home

  • Cooling Shade: Plant deciduous trees on the south or west side

Tree Planting Tips

  • Dig a hole just deep enough for the roots; never let roots circle the bottom

  • Soak roots before planting and never let them dry out

  • Don’t fertilize right after planting—wait until spring

  • Ask: Will the mature tree interfere with lines, roots block pipes, or obstruct views?
