Safety Resources
Protect Yourself, Your Family, and Our Lineworkers
At TEC, safety is always our top priority — for our members, our employees, and our communities. Whether you’re preparing for a storm, working outdoors, or using a generator, knowing how to stay safe around electricity is essential. Explore these important safety tips and resources to help prevent accidents and keep everyone safe around electrical equipment and power lines.
Call Before You Dig
Protect Yourself & Your Property
Always call 811 (Miss Dig) before digging to locate buried lines. Contact TEC for help with tree trimming near power lines. Never build structures or place ladders under overhead lines.
Downed Power Lines
Assume All Downed Lines Are Live
High winds can knock down power lines. Stay away from any downed or dangling line and call TEC immediately at 1-800-327-0166 or 1-989-658-8571. Our crews are on call 24/7 to handle dangerous situations.
Electrical Safety Basics
Smart Habits Save Lives
Never climb poles or trees near wires.
Keep kites, balloons, and metal objects away from lines.
Electricity and water don’t mix — stay dry around outlets and equipment.
Avoid substations, fences, or breaking electrical equipment.
First Aid for Shocks & Burns
Act Quickly, Stay Safe
Cool burns with water, cover lightly — no ointments or butter.
If breathing stops, perform CPR and call 911 immediately.
Never touch a person in contact with power lines — call 911.
Generator Safety
Stay Safe While Powering Up
Generators can be lifesavers during outages, but must be installed and operated safely. Use them outdoors with proper ventilation to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Store fuel safely and have a licensed electrician install a transfer switch to protect line crews. Choose a generator sized for your needs and sensitive equipment.
Lightning & Storm Safety
Don’t Be the Conductor
Seek shelter in a building or vehicle.
Avoid open areas, trees, water, and metal objects.
Stop golfing, swimming, or boating during a storm.
Stay low to the ground if caught outside.
